A postpartum doula supports a family immediately after birth with reassurance, practical assistance, and information. A postpartum doula is there to educate and assist new parents in caring for their newborns and providing them with the care and information they need to navigate their way through the early weeks of parenting.
There are a few things a postpartum doula is not. They are not acting as a nurse or midwife so they do not provide clinical care such as monitoring a baby’s growth or administering medication. A postpartum doula is not a nanny who only looks after older children, but some doulas provide sibling support to help parents and the older kiddos transition into a new role.
The postpartum doula is there to help parents develop and build new skills to enable them to develop confidence in their new role. Doulas do not make decisions for you, or speak for you. This is your postpartum, your baby, your life!
A doula supports you by providing information and explanations you may want about your choices, but it is always you who decides what is best for you.
As a postpartum doula and a mom of two, I know the overwhelming stress of never-ending daily tasks and mental checklists. I provide daytime and overnight doula support. Every family has a unique set of needs that might change day to day. I help families come up with a plan which works best for them and makes their transition to parenthood a little easier.
Daytime support includes assistance with minor household tasks, laundry, loading up the dishwasher or light meal preparation, infant care, breastfeeding support, emotional and physical support, and holding the baby so you can eat, nap, or take a shower.
I offer two overnight care plans. Night-time support consists of infant feeding, changing, soothing and so much more! The first few nights and weeks can be extremely hard on parents with a newborn baby. Babies wake up more frequently during the night to feed every 2-3 hours in the first few weeks which is very essential for their growth and most babies don't start sleeping through the night without waking at least until they are 4 months old. Which can be brutal and sleepless nights can disrupt every aspect of your life with a newborn.
As a night doula, I specialize in night time support by helping parents come up with a low key routine to get as much sleep as possible. I take care of the baby's needs without disrupting parents when the baby wakes up during the night. Read more about the night time support under services and pricing.
I work very closely with each family by keeping them in the loop about any schedule changes and expect the same from my clients so I can keep providing optimal care without interruptions. I understand that things come up and I always try my best to be accommodating and leave some room for flexibility. I offer a 4-6 hours block of care for daytime support and 8-10 hours for nighttime support. I prefer working with only 2 families at a time to avoid schedule conflicts and to provide the best care you deserve.
I offer free 30-minute phone call consultations to answer any questions you have. After the initial phone call, I usually meet with clients in-person or virtually to decide if we are a good fit. I require a 50% deposit, 2 days minimum, and 2 weeks contract. You can always add more days and hours depending on my availability. For in-depth information such as cancellations, backup care, payments, etc, I send over a copy of my detailed sample contract via email so the clients can decide what to expect before signing me on as their postpartum doula.
As a doula of color and an immigrant, I strive to be inclusive of our LGBTQIA+ communities, minorities, and BIPOC. India is one of the most diverse countries, I believe in keeping an open mind, and respecting all cultures, beliefs, traditions, religions, and our differences which make us unique. I am an ally and a supporter, and I strongly believe in building safe and welcoming communities!
